Martinique is part of France and the main language is French.  There are stores that sell warm baguettes and fragrant pastries and there are stores that stock excellent French scents and toiletries that are prized by people from all over the world.  The supermarkets are fitted with French products and shopping in Martinique is just like shopping in France.

The people of Martinique love fine wines and they are obsessed with the sweet syrupy rums produced by the island's 11 rum distilleries.  These distilleries make some of the world’s best-fermented sugar cane liquor.

You can visit the island rum museum that is in a classic 18th century Creole house.  Rum distilleries and a banana museum are located in the heart of the islands extensive banana plantations.  Martinique has no ending supply of pink anthodium blossoms.

The home of Napoleons mistress Josephine is a great place and you must visit it. The mementos of Napoleon are also an attraction for students.  They include a collection of Paul Gauguin artifacts at the same place where he painted Martinican beauties and great seascapes and tropical landscapes.  This is a place you must visit on your trip to Martinique.

Martinique has a higher standard of living than the other West Indian islands.  English is spoken but it is nice to know some French as it will be very helpful.

Fort-de-France is Martinique’s capital and it is a chic and classy town.  You can take the local ferry to the major tourist centers and beaches across the bay.  The bay is so beautiful it is often compared to Italy’s Bay of Naples.

The islands main port has a population of over 100,000 people and is called Fort-de-France. Place de la Savane is the focus of the city. This is a central park area with a statue of Empress Josephine.

Martinique is a great place to vacation.  The scenery and the beaches with the natural plantation beautify this island.  Some of the most popular beaches are Anse Ceron, Pointe du Bout, Anse Mitan, Ansi Turin, Carbet and many others.

You can visit St. Pierre, which was the capital until a volcano destroyed it.  You can also visit the Clement House, which is one of the popular Plantation homes in the area.

Another popular attraction is Diamond Rock, which is a huge seaside rock that is a popular diving site.  It is a hunting round for Scuba divers.  You can take a beautiful drive along the Route de la Trace.

The distilleries of St. James and Rum Museum have a lot to offer tourists.  The Le Musce de la Banana Museum will inform you about the banana industry.  The museum is a great place to see and learn about bananas.  You must also visit the Mangofil Martinique amusement park.  You must visit the aquarium and zoo.  Martinique has many things to offer its tourists.  It is a vacation spot you will never forget.
