Tips for Making Sure You Don't Miss the Cruise Ship
A fear that I’ve always had when taking a cruise vacation, is wondering what I’d do if I got stranded in another country, and the ship left me behind. Here’s a few tips to make sure that you avoid having this happen.
When booking a shore excursion, make sure you book it through the cruise line, unless your visiting an area that you’re very familiar with. It’s worth the extra dollars to have a peace of mind, that the cruise ship will wait for you, if your shore excursion is booked through the cruise line.
Make sure you wear a watch, and adjust the time based on what your captain tells you. Don’t trust your cell phone, because if you’re visiting an area where there is a time change, your cell phone will automatically adjust to that time. If you’re to stay on ship time, and you use your cell phone to keep track of the time, the ship might end up pulling out before you return to the dock. This happens a lot when visiting Mexico, because their time zone is different than the east coast of the United States. Just make sure you check and know if your ship is going to stay on ship time, or change to the time of the location it’s docked at. This varies from one cruise line to another.
To be on the safe side, plan on returning to the ship at least 1 hour before the time they tell you to be back on board.
One way to guarantee you that you’d never get stranded while the ship leaves you sitting at dockside, is to just stay on the ship. Of course, most of the time, this is not an option, because no one wants to travel, and then end up sitting on the ship all day. However, if it’s a port that you’ve been to many times, this is a good time to enjoy the ship’s poolside without it being crowded. You could use this time to relax, read a book, or just hang out.
One thing you should never do, is to assume that the ship will wait for you, because we‘ve been on many cruises, and have watched the ship leave, as the late arrivals stand on the dock in panic.
Plan in advance, and make sure you don’t get stranded, because what could have been a wonderful vacation, could turn into a drastic nightmare.
